This ornate suite of prints in a handmade clamshell box was born out of Seán’s 2015 solo exhibition, Adventure: Capital, representing Ireland at the most prestigious, 56th Venice Biennale. Within the works presented at Venice, which, collectively “explore the allegories and underlying narratives of the contemporary architectural and social environment”, was the element of the illustrations of Boris Artzybasheff and the story of the Gobán Saor, the legendary first builder. The illustrations were Artzybasheff’s interpretation of Irish mystic Ella Young’s book The Wonder-Smith and His Son: A Tale from the Golden Childhood of the World.
The suite contains a text detailing further the tale of An Gobán and the relationship to Boris Artzybasheff, which is signed and numbered. There is also a further supporting booklet which is from part of an exhibition catalogue made for A Blow by Blow Account of Stonecarving in Oxford, an installation realised and exhibited at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, Modern Art Oxford and CAPC Bordeaux over the last three years, the excerpt describing another appearance of An Gobán in the late 1850s.
