This ‘Kavalier and Clay’ edition translates into lithography a large scale mixed media/watercolour wall drawing first installed in Visual Carlow as one work from McCann’s solo exhibition ‘Just Left of Copernuicus (The Roof of the Story)’. The 16 colour lithograph retains the deft touch and delicacy of the wall drawing whilst exploring the complex layering of the lithograph.
Using a 1950’s image of an Aerlingus Air Hostess as anchor point within Kavalier and Clay, Niamh McCann evokes themes of flight, escape, adventure and persecution alluding to a Michael Chabon’s original tale, and backdropping the work with the harrowing, brutal facts of 20th and 21st century Europe.
