Alice Maher is known for her experimental use of materials in explorations of memory and embodiment. The Meeting of Dante and Beatrice is a hybrid print utilising both digital and lithographic methods. The artist made a digital copy of an original lithograph sourced at auction when the contents of the convent she attended as a young girl were being sold off. This image of Dante encountering Beatrice had hung in the private parlour of the nuns and exhibits a particular pre-Raphaelite sense of longing and sexual tension.
This mysterious image is then enclosed in a lithographed drawing patterned on the morphological forms of biologist Ernst Haeckel, and having the silhouette of the female reproductive system.
The image of this natural organism surrounds the heightened space of memory like a window into the secret lives of a lost era.
